The Day After The Plane Went Down

I was licking a senorita
out of all her cream
at the Cuban bakery
somewhere off the strip
in Glendale California

I was licking a senorita
chasing her down
with an espresso

John Jr was turning green
somewhere off the coast
of Martha's Vineyard

The Sunday after the plane
went down I was licking
a senorita and Daryl Hannah
was watching the news

I was crunching the phyllo
and chasing her down
with an espresso

I wore a powdered
sugar mustache and laughed
then cried while I finished
licking off a senorita

It was a July afternoon
I had just turned 39
and John Jr. was turning green

The Sun Has Decided To Stay Away
for Dan Hoy

Dan, today there are many cabbages here
yet there is not one tamarindo
and the sausages are not Spanish
and the roast is just smoked ham
Dan, today there are many cabbages here
yet there is not one guava
not one coconut pastry
and the espresso is not found in the corner
and the Cubans have all gone
they all left to the Orange Bowl
(where they await the fall of the bearded man)
where once there used to be football games
where once the Dolphins won the Super Bowl
where the colors used to be green and orange
Dan, today there are many cabbages here
yet the sun has decided to stay away.
